Every year, IBM releases a list of 5 emerging technologies and trends that will be relevant, and even transform the world in 5 years. The company’s No. 4 prediction this year touches base with the boom of mobile technology, which it says, will make the current digital divide long-ago dinosaurs.
In a video released for this announcement, the tech company says: “In our global society, the wealth of economies are decided by the level of access to information. And in five years, the gap between information haves and have-nots will cease to exist due to the advent of mobile technology.”
First let’s define how experts use the term digital divide. In today’s world of Internet, a digital divide means to a gap between folks who do and do not have high-speed Internet access. As years go by, it has providing good Internet service to the populace has become a critical issue for many countries, even in the United States. Most economies are now using the Internet in almost all aspects of operation. The video also showed that a third of Americans who use their mobile phones to go online do not have high-speed Internet access at home.
Even in developed countries like the United States, not everyone with a mobile device have access to faster wireless data specifically the robust 4G speeds and above.
A few years ago, 3G was viewed as wireless broadband but with the advent of faster 4G data plan, being on the 3G side may qualify one to be on a slower internet side. However, to be able to access 4G data wireless networks, consumers will also have to pay more expensive handsets and data plans.
One of the intriguing possibilities that may develop is the so-called “peer-to-peer access”, in which each handset can connect directly with each other, rather than through phone companies within a fairly small geographic area. Study shows multitasking negatively affects youth social interaction

Technology has become replacements for even the most basic human need to interact with others. However, a new study refutes the trend and emphasized that technology cannot take the place of real human interaction.
The subject of the new study by a Stanford University team is the new Apple video-chat application called Facetime.
The study showed that girls who spent their waking hours switching between Facebook, Youtube, television, and text messaging are more likely to develop poor social interaction and social problems. The results of the study was published in a scientific journal.
Girls multitasking between devices like communicating online while using their mobile phones or watching movies tends to less likely develop normal social tendencies. The study involved around 3461 American girls whose age range between 8 to 12.
Most of the respondents of the study were girls who also responded to a survey in Discovery Girls magazine, although results also applied to boys. According to Clifford Nass during a phone interview, boys’ development is more difficult to track over a long period of time.
The researchers were shocked to learn about the result multitasking has to children. They said that kids should learn about emotion by paying attention to other people, which can only be attained by looking them in the eye.
While not alarming, researchers say that the best antidote is to allow kids to spend plenty of time interacting with friends and family members.
The study did not specify the magic numbers needed by children to be able to become normal in terms of social interaction. Nass said that social skills are only learned when children engage in face-to-face interaction with others and making eye contact rather than switching between devices in a conversation.
The study concluded that Facetime and Skype are not real replacements for interaction because kids tend to multitask on video calls.

He has also worked on a study involving adults and how they are affected by multitasking. The study also showed that adults who multitask heavily have experienced cognitive issues like difficulty focusing and remembering things.

According to Bucs back office, the team’s playbook, a voluminous three-ring binder, was converted into a custom app on the tablet just before this season starts. The tablet now plays films used to study future opponents.

Coaches would be allowed to watch college games to evaluate potential candidates involved in the draft. Apple Unfazed By Amazon Fire

Amazon announced last September that they are taking on Apple’s revered iPad by launching their own version of tablet called Kindle Fire. Accordingly, this new tablet will be priced lower while still giving competitive edge to users.

But not like the usual tablets running on Android operating system, Kindle Fire will not be shipped with a 7-inch screen, built-in cameras, bigger storage space, and 3G support. According to experts, Fire will be an inferior competitor to Apple’s iPad in terms of hardware specs.

Priced at $200, is supposed to link users to Amazons’ Prime service, the instant movie rental service and two-day package shipping of the company. As claimed by Amazon, Fire will be Apple’s fiercest rival in tablet market.

But according to Ben Reitzes, a Barclays analyst who spoke with Apple’s top executives about Amazon’s Fire, the price for the new tablet can be misleading because what the company is doing is promoting “fragmentation” in the tablet market. Basically, the comment means that Amazon is trying to split the Android operating sytem further. It is known that Android is now being used by multiple mobile devices and in terms of support and product improvement, such a scenario is undesirable.

While Apple executives are allowed to put their new competing product in bad light, fragmentation is a real problem. Since the typical duration of mobile service contracts is two years, anyone buying an Android device will worry that his new phone or tablet will no longer be supported after 2 years because Google will no longer supply updates for it.

A recently released survey showed that out of 18 Android phones sold since 2007, over half of them no longer receive OS updates a year after the initial release. This is one of results of too many versions of an operating system. And as such makes Apple grinning from ear to ear. The more fragmentation, the better it is for Apple.

Google has been trying to address the issue by telling manufacturers to continue providing updates for up to 18 months after the initial consumer purchase but the execution still depends on the manufacturers.

Another reason Apple is not worried about Kindle Fire is that both devices, the iPad and Fire are aimed at two different consumer groups. According to Apple executives, they can coexist with each other in the tablet market.

Sarah Rotman Epps, a veteran analyst for Forrester Research views the emergence of Fire as actually a good addition to the entire mobile game market. Android is already fragmented as such and the addition of one product does not affect the ecosystem significantly anymore. However, the addition of Fire will create more opportunities for app developers, which they can also port to other Android devices.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire may not be a big technology news at this time, but the next coming months will be a good time to gauge what it’s real value is in an already congested, competitive tablet market.
